Violet Menace?
Everyone knows the notorious holiday scoundrel, the Grinch, who notoriously purloined Christmas. While we’ve come to recognize him by his unique green hue, it turns out, he wasn’t always this color. Many of us naturally linked his green complexion with envy and a host of negative feelings, and so, never really thought to question it. However, this wasn’t the original color of our favorite Christmas antagonist.
In the original 1956 publication of Dr. Seuss’s famed book, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”, the titular character was depicted in black and white, sporting pink eyes. The notion of a purple Grinch is mere fabrication. Interestingly, the Grinch’s iconic green hue was conceived by renowned animator Chuck Jones in 1966. The inspiration stemmed from a particularly unsightly green rental car that he once drove, forever transforming the Grinch into the green creature we recognize today.
