#29: Dog’s Soup
This one may seem pretty wild, but in the past, people used the term ‘dog soup’ to refer to water. Originating in informal English during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, ‘dog soup’ conveyed a derogatory and dismissive attitude towards the quality of water, particularly when it was unpalatable or unclean.
The term likely derived from the notion of water being as undesirable and unappetizing as soup made from dogs, reflecting the challenges of accessing clean and potable water in certain contexts. We should probably be thankful that this term has disappeared from the world, and hope we’d never have to use it again.
