In 2023 dollars, the S.S. Gairsoppa’s cargo of 7 million ounces of silver was valued at over $176 million before sinking off England. Launched in 1919, this steam merchant vessel played a role in WWII.

The Gairsoppa didn’t just carry silver. Its hold contained tea, pig iron, and other valuables until a German U-Boat sank it. Odyssey Marine’s 2011 expedition recovered the treasure, keeping 80% of the value, the rest went to the government.
