The Legendary Boot of Cortez: Mexico’s Largest Gold Discovery
Discovered in 1989 in Sonora, Mexico, the ‘Boot of Cortez’ remains the largest gold nugget found in the Western Hemisphere, weighing a staggering 389.4 troy ounces, or 26.7 pounds. This monumental find occured about seventy miles south of Arizona.
Armed with only a modest metal detector from Radio Shack, the prospector initially unearthed nothing but debris. However, persistence paid off when his detector signaled frantically one morning, leading to the discovery of the Boot of Cortez, now valued over $1.5 million.
