Discovery of a New Ancient Human Species in the Philippines
Homo luzonensis, nicknamed “Ubag” locally, is a newly discovered archaic human in the Philippines, suggesting a pygmy variant from the Late Pleistocene Era. Notable remains include distinctive teeth and phalanges.
The supposed pygmy inhabited Callao Cave, possibly dragging Philippine deer carcasses for consumption using primitive tools. Initially thought to be Homo erectus, 2019 research reclassified it as H. luzonensis, inspired by local mythology.
