Childeric’s Royal Treasure: Discovery and Loss
In 1653, the church of Saint-Brice unveiled a treasure trove, including a tomb with over 300 gilded bees, jewelry, coins, and a signet ring depicting a spear-holding long-haired man. This find highlighted Childeric’s affluent legacy.
In 1831, a devastating theft led to the melting of 80kg of Childeric’s gold treasure, erasing much of its history. Miraculously, a few items such as two bees, coins, parts of a sword, and the Rennes Panera bowl survived this calamity.
