#8: Clackers
Even if you weren’t around during that time, you must be familiar with Clackers, also known as Clankers, a once-popular toy from the 1970s. It consisted of two hard acrylic balls suspended on strings, which people would rhythmically move up and down to create a clanking noise. While the simple toy enjoyed immense popularity, it faced discontinuation due to safety concerns.
The hard acrylic balls could shatter upon impact or under excessive pressure, posing significant risks to children playing with them. Reports of eye injuries, bruised hands, and broken clackers led to growing safety concerns, prompting some manufacturers to discontinue production voluntarily. In response to these issues, safety regulations were tightened, and alternative materials were explored, resulting in a decline in the popularity of the original clackers and their eventual discontinuation from the toy market.
