#14: Shotgun Wedding
In the past, societal norms placed significant emphasis on chastity and the sanctity of marriage, making premarital intimacy and pregnancy outside of wedlock socially unacceptable. To avoid judgment and maintain respectability, some couples resorted to altering their marriage certificate dates.
It sounds like that was the case with this storyteller’s grandparents. It was common knowledge in the family that one kid was born shortly after their grandparents wedding, and so their wedding date took place nine months before her birthday. However, while cleaning out their house, they found their wedding certificate, which stated the wedding took place only five months prior to her date of birth.
