Sink or Swim
It feels like there’s been a massive shift in how parents treat children. These days, parents fuss and hover over their children constantly, giving rise to the term “helicopter parents.” They don’t let them run around on their own outside; they schedule constant sports and music lessons, and they basically treat their children like they are fragile and need to be handled with care.
But that is absolutely not how most of the people who are parents now were raised. Most of us spent a lot of time running around on our own, and most of us had a male relative who loved throwing us in pools, whether or not we were ready. I think maybe we need a happy medium somewhere between those two extremes.
