#45: Ancient Fossil Trees
This ancient fossil tree was discovered buried in northern Thailand near a moist, tropical rainforest. It was measured 72.2 meters, or 236.8 feet. This incredible height tells us that the tree was even taller when it was alive. It probably measured over 100 meters, or 328 feet, tall during its prime.
This particular tree dates back to about 800,000 years ago. The height of this ancient tree is only comparable to our modern-day redwood trees, which can grow taller than 400 feet. However, this fossilized tree doesn’t seem to be related to redwoods. Studies revealed that this now-extinct species of tree is closely related to Koompassia elegans or Koompassia excelsa, which are some of the tallest trees in Thailand today.
