#32: One Heavy Door
This incredible photo shows the world’s heaviest hinged door in 1979. This door is installed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. It was eight feet thick, twelve feet wide, and weighed 97,000 pounds, or 48.5 tons. This incredibly intense door housed an experimental lab where scientists would test fusion neutrons and different types of metals.
Believe it or not, the woman opening this door isn’t just posing for the picture. This door had a specially designed hinge installed that allowed one person to open it without any additional help. We’re sure that the hinge was a special safety feature, which we appreciate. We can’t help but wonder if this orange door is still the world’s heaviest hinged door. If not, what door took its place?
