However, this photo is weird because people aren’t wearing masks for the reasons you might think. This photo of the city is from 2023. The air quality was so poor that people had to wear masks for protection. 

High levels of pollution, smoke, and ash traveled to New York City and many other places because of the intense fires in Quebec, Canada. The long-burning and devastating fires began in the summer of 2023 and caused mass wildlife destruction. New York City is relatively close to Quebec, but smoke spread as far as the US Midwest and Philadelphia.
