#25: Gigantopithecus
There are some ancient species of animals that sound so outlandish that they’re hard to believe. Gigantopithecus is one of those incredible ancient animals. This giant primate lived about 2 million to 200,000 years ago. Scientists have found evidence of Gigantopithecus in southern China and possibly other areas of Asia like Thailand and Indonesia.
As of right now, Gigantopithecus is the largest genus of primates known to have existed. Some researchers estimate that these primates measured up to 12 feet tall. Their true height is unknown because we have only discovered their fossilized teeth and jaw remnants. No full skeleton of a Gigantopithecus exists, so we can’t tell for sure. Maybe scientists will find more bones in the future.
