#31: Sugar Daddy Candies
Originally priced at a mere two cents, Sugar Daddy candies emerged as a beloved caramel treat in 1925, thanks to the innovation of the James O. Welch Company, which later became part of Tootsie Roll Industries. These candies, initially named Papa Sucker, offer a delectably hard caramel delight attached to a stick alongside their famous family member, the caramel-flavored Sugar Babies jelly beans.
The creative minds behind this caramel sensation, Robert and James Welch, founded the company that introduced Sugar Daddy as its premier product, quickly expanding the lineup with Sugar Babies. The 1960s saw the birth of Sugar Mama, a unique chocolate-coated variant, though the 1980s sadly discontinued it. The brand underwent ownership changes, moving from Welch to Warner-Lambert and eventually to Tootsie Roll Industries in the 1990s.
