#9: The Original Colors of Greek and Roman Statues
Contrary to the prevailing image presented in history textbooks, ancient Greek and Roman statues were not always depicted in plain white marble. In fact, these sculptures were originally adorned with vibrant colors, meticulously painted to bring them to life.
Over time, however, exposure to the elements and natural deterioration caused the pigments to fade, leaving behind the iconic white marble appearance we associate with classical art today. Nevertheless, recent research and discoveries have revealed traces of the original colors on some statues, challenging the conventional perception of ancient sculptures as monochromatic.
