34. Well Done, Canada
The War of 1812, when America decided to add Canada to its shopping cart, but the checkout did not go as planned. We aimed for a land grab and ended up grabbing a slice of humble pie instead. Canada, not yet officially Canada, but Canadian enough, said “no thanks” to the annexation invitation.

It’s a historical facepalm moment. The U.S. learned that even neighbors of the nicest variety don’t appreciate uninvited guests. They might be famous for saying “sorry,” but in this instance, the Canadians weren’t the ones needing to apologize.
