#18: Furbies
Introduced in 1998, Furbies was more than just a toy, but a cultural phenomenon. Known for their interactive and pet-like qualities, every kid in the late 90s and early 2000s wanted to have one. However, their discontinuation in the early 2000s was primarily due to concerns related to privacy and security. Furbies featured sound and light sensors, which could potentially record conversations or sensitive information inadvertently, raising privacy concerns among parents and consumers.
In a post-9/11 world with heightened security awareness, these concerns were amplified. The Furbies’ unpredictable behavior, language development, and potential for unintended profanity prompted some schools and organizations to ban them, affecting their popularity. While Furbies were discontinued during their initial run, they made a comeback in later years with enhanced security features and remain a nostalgic and iconic toy from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
