#37: The First National Championship Goes To…
Sports have always been about competition. That’s why we love football so much. We’re naturally competitive, and we love to cheer on our teams to victory. From the beginning, college football has held national championships in one form or another. The very first national championship for college football was held all the way back in 1869.
The winner of this inaugural championship was Princeton University. However, these were the early days of American football. Weirdly enough, there were only two formal football teams! Nothing was official or formalized, so things changed pretty quickly as the game evolved. In the 1930s, the powers that be created a regulated, formal national championship system to recognize the best teams of each season.
