#22: A Weighty Issue
Do you think you’re someone who doesn’t have any biases? Would you never judge someone based on how they look, their race, or where they come from? Well, I have bad news: you are almost certainly kidding yourself if you think that. Even the best-intentioned of us have biases that we may not be aware of.
And a big one is weight bias, where people who are of above-average weight are treated differently because of it. It can be a major problem in areas like medicine, where doctors may write off legitimate health complaints because they assume that any symptoms are just a natural result of being overweight.
